Amazing Grace owes its creation to a key experience of its author John Newton, who was the captain of a slave ship.

After he got into severe distress on May 10, 1748 and was rescued after invoking the mercy of God, he first treated the slaves in a more humane way.

After a few years he even gave up his profession entirely, instead became a clergyman and joined forces with William Wilberforce to fight slavery.
