Since the opera's premiere on April 25, 1926 by Arturo Toscanini at La Scala in Milan, the aria has been part of the standard repertoire of all great tenors.
Luciano Pavarotti achieved great popularity beyond the operatic stage with Puccini's aria. It became the climax of many of his concerts and led to an identification of the singer with this work.
