Darkness and Light
Darkness and Light – Songbook and CD
When this album is released on September 4, 2019, it will mark exactly ten years since I started my YouTube channel.
In 2009, YouTube was far from having the immense reach it has today. I had just finished working on my online piano school, and my sheet music videos were an important part of this concept.
On YouTube, of course, these videos had a completely different effect. They not only supported and monitored learning success, but many users started playing the piano after watching these videos. Soon, I began playing famous cover songs as well. Naturally, I also started writing my own pieces again—something I had neglected for years due to my work in the studio and live performance sectors. That’s essentially how the video channel on YouTube came to be.
From the beginning, I noticed the lively communication among users about my music. This inspired me to continue composing original pieces and publishing them alongside sheet music videos so that anyone could play them too.
For me, the last decade has been a journey of highs and lows, filled with beautiful and challenging times. There were great personal losses, as well as incredibly joyful moments shared through making music.
This album is also a journey into the past 10 years and has reminded me of what music truly is:
Music is a very special language that everyone understands. There is no emotion that cannot be conveyed through music. It soothes the soul, moves you to tears, and turns dreams into reality.
While playing, I was reminded of how music preserves memories for eternity, conquers fear, gives courage, and provides strength. Music has helped me through many low points in my life, and I can’t imagine life without it. It is the center of our emotions, spanning all directions—from joy and pain to boundless ease and deep reflection.
All my songs originate either from emotional situations and moments or from memories of specific situations and moods. Above all, they always arise from spontaneous improvisation. Rarely do I play a piece twice before recording it—that’s the only way it truly feels expressive to me.
I hope this album brings you as much joy as it has brought me, whether you’re just listening or playing the pieces yourself. “Darkness and Light” is an album about the first decade…
Starting this summer, all sheet music will include chord symbols and QR codes, so you can quickly check the piece on YouTube or even play along with someone who might not be skilled at reading sheet music!
I have once again put great effort into arranging the pieces for the best possible piano sound, yet they remain:
truly playable and suitable for all piano players.
